Fellow adventurers, gather 'round for a confession of epic proportions! Ever since the inception of my bookish escapades as a full-grown hobbit, I must admit to an affliction. I find myself ensnared in the clutches of what I can only describe as MAAS DESTRUCTION!! Yes, the prognosis is grim. I toss and turn at night, my meals are but a mere afterthought, and dreams are a flurry of Illyrian warriors, sassy and powerful female leads, and otters donning yellow vests. The tragedy is palpable, and yet, I extend an invitation for you to embark with me into the enchanting multiverse crafted by Sarah J. Maas, undeniably one of the foremost fantasy architects of our generation. Are you ready for the adventure?
At the end of this month, the much-anticipated third installment of the Crescent City series by Sarah J. Maas, titled "House of Flame and Shadow," will grace us. It feels like a lifetime of waiting. This post is spoiler-free, but if you haven't read "House of Earth and Blood" by SJM, I implore you to cannonball in like Smeagol into Mount Doom after the One Ring. Run, don't walk.
“Through love, all is possible.”
SJM's talent in world-building initially drew me in—the layers of development, culture, and history make me feel like a citizen of Lunathion. If you could be any Vanir, what species would you be? Fae, Shifter, Sprite... or Angel? **cue unhinged fangirl scream** High Fae hold a special place for me since ACOTAR was my first taste of Maas Destruction. However, SJM will leave you curious about the most mystifying beings. **winks in Asteri**
“Immortality is a long time to have a giant stick up your ass.”
Once SJM draws you into the world of Bryce, Hunt, and their perfect posse, the evolution of the characters whisks you away. SJM has depicted the vulnerability and resilience of the human heart in ACOTAR and TOG, and that continues in Crescent City. This series has taught me lessons of love, compassion, and willpower in ways that non-fiction books, while beloved, have not. My Life Adventure hasn't been ideal, and SJM helps us see ourselves in these magical, powerful beings that exist to entertain. Yet, they hold lessons about found family, disenfranchisement, trauma, feminism, and prejudice. This is Maas Destruction, and I wouldn't trade it for a kilo of mithril.
“My friends are with me and I am not afraid.”
So, what do you think House of Flame and Shadow has in store? House of Sky and Breath set us up for a reunion; I wonder where SJM plans to take the struggle against the Asteri from there. Also, what new couples do you anticipate? I have a few ships I want to sail. Share your thoughts in the comments!
Let's brace ourselves for MAAS DESTRUCTION!
Here's to growth, wisdom, and the journey ahead.
Warm regards, Jae
