Dear Adventurers,
Healing is often misunderstood as a one-time event or a box to check off. But as Nicole LePera writes in her transformative book, How to Do the Work, “True change is about becoming conscious of who we are and how we got here, and then taking consistent action to create a life that aligns with our values and dreams.”
This perspective reminds us that healing is not a passive experience. It’s an active, ongoing process that we live through every choice we make. Healing is about transforming harmful patterns, integrating practices that nurture body and mind, and building a sustainable foundation for resilience. It isn’t just about what we think—it’s about how we live.
We all have patterns shaped by our past.
Maybe it’s the overachievement that leaves you exhausted, the self-doubt that keeps you silent, or the people-pleasing that sacrifices your own needs for others. These patterns often began as survival mechanisms, ways we learned to cope with adversity.
LePera writes, “Unhealed trauma lives in our nervous system. It shows up in our habits, our reactions, and the stories we tell ourselves.” Recognizing these patterns is the first step to breaking free.
For instance, if you grew up in an environment where love felt conditional, you might have developed a habit of overworking to prove your worth. While this served a purpose in the past, it can lead to burnout and physical tension over time. The key to breaking these cycles is awareness—seeing the connections between your past experiences and current behaviors—and then choosing differently.
LePera emphasizes that healing isn’t just a mental process—it’s deeply connected to the body.
She explains, “The body doesn’t forget what the mind tries to ignore.” Unresolved emotions and chronic stress can manifest physically, showing up as digestive issues, fatigue, or chronic pain.
To heal, we must care for both the mind and the body. Mindfulness, breathwork, and visualization are powerful tools for integrating emotional healing with physical wellness. For example:
Mindfulness: Being present calms the nervous system, reducing the fight-or-flight response that often triggers physical symptoms.
Breathwork: Deep breathing activates the vagus nerve, helping regulate digestion and lowering stress hormones.
Movement: Practices like yoga or walking help release tension stored in the body and improve overall well-being.
LePera explains, “Healing happens when we learn to reconnect with our bodies and give ourselves permission to feel.” This reconnection creates harmony between the mind and body, allowing us to move from survival mode to a state of thriving.
True healing isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency.
Sustainable growth comes from the small, intentional steps we take each day. LePera calls this process reparenting, offering ourselves the love, care, and boundaries we may not have received as children.
“Reparenting ourselves is not about blaming or resenting our past, but about creating the future we want,” she writes. This might look like:
Setting boundaries to protect your energy and time.
Creating a morning routine that grounds and inspires you.
Practicing self-compassion when you fall short instead of succumbing to self-criticism.
These small acts, practiced consistently, build a foundation for lasting change. They transform healing from a one-time effort into a lifestyle that supports emotional and physical well-being.
Healing isn’t just personal—it’s communal.
When we commit to doing the work, we not only transform ourselves but also influence the environments and relationships around us. As LePera beautifully puts it, “When we heal ourselves, we heal the generations that came before us and those that come after.” (more about this in Reaching Resilience: Installment #3)
This ripple effect is at the core of the BodyMind Blueprint. We create a life of integrity and resilience by aligning our habits, patterns, and actions with our authentic selves. And as we heal, we inspire others to do the same.
Healing is not a destination; it’s a journey.
It’s about breaking free from old patterns, reconnecting with your body, and living in a way that honors your most authentic self. As LePera reminds us, “The work isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about coming home to yourself.”
So, dear adventurer, let’s embrace this journey together. Let’s live the lessons we learn and build a life of resilience and growth. Healing isn’t something we achieve—it’s something we become.
